Author's Story

Caring for an aging parent is a journey many of us will face, yet few are truly prepared when the time comes. The emotional weight, medical decisions, and financial responsibilities can be overwhelming, especially when information is hard to find. I created this workbook to help families navigate this challenging time with clarity and confidence. My personal experience, along with my work as a firefighter and EMT, taught me the value of preparation. In emergencies, having the right information at the right time makes all the difference—and the same is true for caregiving.

When my mother passed away in 2017, my family struggled with a lack of essential medical and financial details. A year later, my uncle’s sudden passing left my aunt in an even more difficult position—she did not even know how to access their bank account. These experiences showed me just how unprepared many of us are for the realities of aging.

Our parents value their independence, but when it comes to their care, having access to key information is crucial. This workbook is designed to help families gather and organize medical, financial, and legal details before they are needed, reducing stress and ensuring the best care possible. It is not about taking over—it is about making informed decisions together.

Whether your parent is still able to manage their affairs or you are stepping into a caregiving role, this resource will guide you through the process gradually. Having these details on hand can prevent unnecessary complications and delays, offering peace of mind for both you and your loved one.

From my family to yours, I hope this workbook helps you feel more prepared, more in control, and more at ease as you navigate this journey.
